peter and caitlin's ( http://www.myspace.com/freelovefenner) show was awesome. they're playing again next friday. who woulda thought my princely little bro would end up playing backup bass and guitar licks on his girlfriend's songs? haha. i had a dream those two put my grandmother's dining room set out in the alley and when i went out to get it some man was loading it in his truck. i explained they were my grandmother's and could i have them back but he said he only had 3 of the chairs. i ran around the city in an incredible state of anxiety trying to find the woman who had the 4th chair.

it's lightning storms over montreal. the whole city feels like big grey bubble about to burst. fretting about missed festivals and ripening fruit and that chair on the sidewalk (should i give it a good home even tho it's a bit smelly?) i think i'll buy a kiddie pool at canadian tire on the way home instead of going to the library to take out a book on how to hire someone properly and that edith butler cd from 1995. it's nearly quitting time hoorah

6:22 pm
reading jackovacs clever/funny/vicious east asia travelogue led me back to the lj fold and to my delite found all sorts of fab news from my bristol mates who are all doing such amazing things! art shows! cafes! books! truly inspiring

had a fun weekend with jackovacs visiting. we reverted directly to NB mode and sat in the kitchen by the stove in uncomfortable chairs drinking tea and gossiping and waiting for the war cakes to bake. then down to puckface's for some visiting and an old style jamboree in the basement. vinnie rocked out 4 real on the uke doing rosie won't you please come home and that mccartney uke song off ram. caitlin played bass and puck was on the organ. it was like a scene from up home tonight.

jackovacs told us about his plan to build a house out of a grain silo in central NB, with a creek, a windmill and solar energy. vinnie finished digging his trench. we ate war cake and lahmajoun and radish leaf salad for supper. mmmm, not a bad weekend.

current mood: proud
current music: sweetheart like you - dylan

1:24 pm - this is our house
this is our house.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

we move in may 31. it is 20x40 feet. and has a 20x40 foot backyard.

we've got wild plans about renovating our house. this is a fairly sensible version of some of the floorplans we've come up with.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the living room is currently in the front, and the bedroom at the back. there's a kid's room at the front on the other side, which vinnie will use as his office. i plan to take over the basement as my junk/craft/sewing/fun/exercise space. after all with 5foot ceilings it is fit only for a gnome like me.

(i don't know how to scale images that's why they're so huge)

12:03 pm - so i guess all this means it's spring
the sun's shining here, my bike's still in the shed but i took the bold step of not buying a metro pass this month. i also planted some tomato seeds last night and am still jetlagged from the time change. so i guess all this means it's spring.

i'm supposed to find out soon if i get the allotment. i both hope i will and i won't.

pros:
place to grow vegetables
will leave garden at home free for flowers and hammocks
i'd be part of an allotment community made up of old italians and young hipsters
if i share with mother in law or downstairs neighbour, there's a good chance they'd weed my rows out of the kindness of their hearts

cons:
it's a lot of work and i'm essentially a lazy cow
i fear busybody allotment neighbours judging my plot and telling me how to live my life
enforced socialising if i share with mother in law or downstairs neighbour

i think there are more pros, right. so i guess i hope i get it.

i also have seeds for sunflowers, broad beans, dill and pickling cucumbers. i'm planning to make about 500 jars of dill pickles this year.

i need some tips about growing all this stuff. i have a black thumb and fear all my hard work will be for nought. i bought this book, the A.B.C. of Gardening:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

but W E Shewell-Cooper is a more serious person than I and to be totally honest it's an A.B.C. for the advanced gardener i would say. but he did introduce me to the concept 'bastard trenching.' if i get my allotment there will be much merriment and bastard trenching.

when we were in holland, we were delighted by the allotments we saw from the train between delft and the hague. they had little sheds with curtains in the windows and satellite tv and lawn chairs and wind catchers. they were very jolly. i'd like a homey dutch-style allotment.

12:43 pm - hangin out in TO
had a lovely time hanging out in the big (english) city this weekend. staying with heather and ralph and mr milo:
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

contrary to what montrealers say, TO is very cool. partly because it is the home of HONEST ED'S!!! here's little milo checking out the wares:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

and me with my 10 cent soap dishes, "another fine product from lady angela" (i put one back and regretted it later).

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

TO also has crosswalks that work - well actually crosswalks here work too but the drivers don't know what they're for.

in ralph & heather's hood there was this turkish convenience store:

12:36 pm - death to the pixies
went to see the pixies on saturday. was totally stoked tho had to wait in line in zero degree weather with 4000 other schmucks while the "is it mandatory/is it not mandatory" coat check line sorted itself out. then we were in .... a hockey arena. ummm. I didn't know CEPSUM was a hockey rink. $50 tix for a hockey rink.
so we got ourselves a plum spot by the body check barrier and settled in to rawk our sox.
sadly.
first off was this stinky band from hamilton who sounded like U2. at least they worked in the arena setting.
next up were overhyped australians (new zealanders?) the datsuns. they sucked pretty hard and reminded me that i can't even ironically like sabbath-style hard rock. even in a hockey rink. especially in a hockey rink.
finally the pixies came on. and they sucked.
well, the pixies themselves may not have sucked, but the sound totally did. it was impossible for at least 90 seconds to recognize what damned song they were playing.
frank black didn't speak to the audience. they didn't speak to each other. it was like listening to a greatest hits record through blown speakers.
what a let down. boooooo.

1:45 pm - a bad thing and a good thing (fingers crossed)
bad. went camping on the weekend. read room with a view in the canoe while vinnie fished. an enormous horse fly came along buzzed around my head till i was half crazy, swatting at it maniacally, and manage to knock my sunglasses -- prescription, beautiful retro with cubic zirconia detailing -- into the fucking lake. watch in slow motion as they sink down down down till i can see them no more at which point i sweep my hand in to grasp at empty water. weep.

good. (maybe). back at work, call evil student loan people who have sent my student loan to collection. somehow manage to convince them to erase all the bad stuff and bring my loan back. i think that's what the guy said anyway. and now (please oh please) i think i can get a credit card in canadia and go shopping and buy fun things.

1:25 pm - st john the baptist
yesterday was a holiday in quebec, the fete nationale. we got out of town to avoid the flag waving and went to the beach. it was a mildly skanky beach in the north of the island with a $5 entrance fee and there was some moderate flag waving going on there as well. there were loads of families and little kids running around kicking sand in everyone's faces. it was irritating at first but then i got into the vibe and it was nice.
there was a lifeguard who couldn't stop blowing her whistle at the stupid kids engaging in horseplay in the water. they have a pretty small part of the lake cordoned off and if you drown outside the ropes i think they won't save you. we didn't take a chance.
the water was murky and there were mussels on the bottom. i didn't know mussels grew in lakes. v wanted to take them home and cook em. we did illegally pick some wild grape leaves to make stuffed vine leaves. mmm. figured we paid our money we're going to take some of the flora home with us.
why do quebecers like john the baptist so much? he's their patron saint apparently. why? he's the hair shirt guy with the severed head on a platter. and he ate bugs right?

11:03 am - ladyfest!
it's over now. i feel like crying, sleeping, and hugging everyone especially michal & rosie my war buddies.

now we've done it i can't believe we put on a festival. what a mad idea.

and now valerie from montreal and christina from madrid want to do ladyfests in their towns! how amazing. and everyone's saying they had so much fun.

and we got to hang out with so many cool people like frances mckee and syd the infant. syd was perhaps the coolest punter at ladyfest. he fell in love with nat and i think the feeling was mutual. and chris & allison who were amazing, and all the ladyfesters from other towns who came along to support us & help out.

and i got to have a long chat with christina rosenvinge and her husband ray loriga who were so great and really warm and interesting and lovely.

i want to watch some of the films now and i want to find out how the workshops went.

thanks to everyone who came & everyone who helped & everyone who performed...

hooray for ladyfest!

1:48 pm - can you die from ladyfesting?
me & the evil one spent all day yesterday from about 8:30 am til 12:30 am ladyfesting.

we had to go to town to look at the totally great scout hut which i want to live in. it is so cool. it has 3 bells but the man wouldn't let evil ring them.

then we had to try to find a photobooth that worked. we practised looking evil and had the pix done, along with lollypop & lady lucy. who also looked pretty evil it must be said.

then me & evil had to go to the bank adn transfer some funds to a swiss bank acct. all in a day's work for a ladyfester.

then we had to go & talk to the tshirt people about getting ladyfest t-shirts done. they were very nice and we got high on the ink fumes. lovely.

then we walked back to my house and worked on the programme. rat & nosy came by to show us the map rat's working on. rat is VERY worried that no one is going to come to ladyfest. i am too but she believes that only 10 people will come. so c'mon cheap ass bristolians, buy some damned tix.

cheap ass bristolians say: "oh boo hoo £15 that's so expensive. i mean i spend that on pints of stella every other night down the vic but £15 that's really expensive for a gig. i never pay more than £5. unless it's something at colston hall - then i'll fork out £25 to see jools holland tinkle the ivories. oh and this hideous club kid outfit i'm wearing cost £160. but £15 - you've got to be taking the piss. "

current mood: grrrr

5:19 pm - suffragette city
it's fabulous to get away sometimes. whatever did i get up to in london?

- the man in the newsagents in kensington high street gave me a stick of his gum
- cute french boy in sainsburys asked my advice about muller light 5 for £1.50
- kentish cherries & beer in hyde park
- cindy sherman at the serpentine (don't get the clowns but the rest rocks)
- fantastic meal cooked by beautiful german woman and handsome frenchman consisting of caipirinhas, bruschetta, malfatti, sea bream baked in salt, chocolate mousse with raspberries, and financiers. and much wine nervously provided by the canadians.
- that evening also consisted of fun conversation NOT about children or cars or mobile phones or housing prices. Caroline & Olivier left their 6 month old baby downstairs in their flat and only referred to it twice as 'this child' and did not carry baby monitors or tell us it's name or sex or anything. hooray for french parenting!
- and hooray for handsome corentin and his double entendres. his 'how to YOU do' innuendo has had gerry & the pacemakers in my head ever since
- next day we engaged in some accidental feminism in hackney
- met a load of wacky academic performance artists some of whom shared their tequila with us!
- slept all night even though the air mattress i was on lost all its air
- didn't stress out about ladyfest
- but did offload ladyfest flyers on some suffragettes

so london was pretty fantastic. even the freak express wasn't that awful - less full of freaks than usual. i guess it's good i never moved to london cuz i would have ended up loathing it but it always makes me wonder what my tenure in lime would have been like if i'd been east instead of west. hmmm. anyway.

wham bam thank you ma'am, suffragette city!

2:12 pm - waxing poetical
so last night wasn't as bad as i thought. i mean the poetry kind of slides over you, pretty non-offensive, esp if you;re behind the speakers.

music was fun. el cocinero and cupcake (and moi) spun some groovy disques & mike discovered his inner belgian while dancing to plastique bertrand.

me & mr cupid had a good chat - we are good at being furtively evil together. i think that is what we will call our graphic design co when we do the programme. heh.

12:23 pm - hen night action
ok so i need some ideas for sarah's hent night.

i need a net curtain for the wedding veil thing.

tracy gave me some ideas but they were slightly half-baked because she's not been on a hen night but has half-listened to the stories. one was that the bride-to-be is meant to find a man with a tattoo on his arse. but we weren't sure what was supposed to happen then - should she kiss it, take a picture of it, kick it???

i'd like to make her a tshirt with a naughty slogan on it & the equivalent of lifesavers stuck to it - murray mints??

naughty slogan - any suggestions??? sexy sadie?? i think i'll make her wear my curtain which is a sari because her nickname is Sari.

where should we go dancing? somewhere with 80s music.

need to involve weston or at least clevedon in this somehow...

HELP!!!
